When Emile Mayrisch (1862-1928), Chairman of the Board of Directors of Arbed, died suddenly, a quasi-national funeral was held in his honour in Luxembourg on 8 March 1928. Emile Mayrisch founded Arbed (Aciéries réunis de Burbach-Eich-Dudelange) in 1911 with the Belgian Gaston Barbanson. The steel industry was then the major industry in Luxembourg and contributed to its economic development. At Mayrisch's funeral, many personalities came to pay tribute to this captain of industry, and thousands of people flocked to the funeral procession. These archive images, played in the cinema at the time, show the importance of this figure in the society of the time and the paternalistic nature of the work organisation.
